The Booker Washington Institute (BWI) Alumni Association has formally unveiled a welcome an anti-Ebola billboard posted near the Roberts International Airport (RIA) in Margibi County, and made a donation of faucet buckets to two key clinics in the community. The red and white billboard, according to BWIAA, clearly indicates the high quality of its design and printing. The billboard was made possible through financial support from the Jeety Trading Corporation, whose CEO Upjit Sing Sachdeva, popularly known as Jeety, is a member of the BWI Board of Governors.BWI alumni attending the unveiling ceremony on Saturday, June 18, sent amusing echoes across the airport community as they sang their famous school ode (O dear Booker-T…) to the silent envy and pleasure of guests and commuters. The billboard’s erection is one of many initiatives undertaken by his administration , according to the outgoing president of the Alumni Association, Jonathan Paye-Layleh. Mr. Paye-layleh said the project came about when the BWIAA was touched by the devastating impacts of Ebola constraining them to erect the billboard, which carries both welcoming and Ebola prevention messages. In addition to its welcome and farewell messages, the billboard has the inscriptions: “Make Ebola prevention a way of life and stay safe” as well as “Join the global fight to defeat Ebola.”“This is our way of identifying with efforts still being exerted to get the public to appreciate the need to protect themselves from Ebola,” Mr. Paye-Layleh said.BWI Alumni Association’s former president and current chairman of the association’s Board of Advisors, Mohammed Kanneh, cut the ribbon to the billboard, cautioning the public to continue fighting until Ebola no longer poses a national threat to the country and its inhabitants.Mr. Kanneh, a member of the BWI Class of 1981, hoped that those using the RIA highway will not only read the billboard, but will also live by the message it portrays. He thanked Mr. Jeety for supporting the alumni association’s drive to undertake the project and hailed the outgoing leadership of the alumni association for this and other initiatives. Also in remarks, the oldest BWI alumnus at the program, Paul T. Wennah of the Class of 1971, a former dean of boys, called for greater unity among BWI graduates so that the alumni association will grow from strength to strength. The incoming president of the BWI Alumni Association, Koffa Tenbroh, and his corps of officers, who will be taking over on June 25, were present at the ceremony.BWI alumni working at Firestone and RIA turned out in a sizable number to participate in the occasion. The billboard launch preceded the celebration of BWI’s 87th founding anniversary, which is slated for Saturday, June 25.The celebration traditionally sees an alumni association-led parade on the streets of Kakata, sporting activities and an indoor program on the BWI campus. This year’s celebration, the first under the regime of the new principal, Attorney Harris Fomba Tarnue, promises to be grand, as already, says Mr. Paye-Layleh, more than 600 souvenir items produced for the occasion have all been sold.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)
Both teams entertained their supporters with good football but neither side broke the deadlock in a very entertaining first half. The second half maintained the same high tempo and Mombasa took lead after engineering a move that started from the right flank and ended with Rasheed tucking the ball into the net to give United the win.Despite playing with more urgency than the first half, Gulshan could not draw level and Mombasa were left to celebrate at the referee’s final whistle. The two teams had an easy ride to the final with Mombasa winning their quarterfinal match 2-0 as Gulshan edged out Ghaid with the same score line.Other quarterfinal matches saw Nacet pip Malindi United 4-3 on post match penalties while the hard fighting Voi Youth were sent packing by Anidan who beat them 2-1.In the semis, Gulshan ousted Nacet 2-0 while Mombasa had to go to post-match penalties to dismiss Anidan 4-2 after the two teams managed a barren draw in normal time. The third place went to Nacet who beat Anidan courtesy of Yare Noor’s solitary goal in the first half. The girls’ matches were played in a round robin format after Waa Girls and St. Charles failed to turn up.The matches were equally entertaining but with a glut of goals as Changamwe Girls suffered an 8-0 humiliation at the hands of Kilifi who were then brought down by Lamu Girls in a 6-0 whitewash. In other matches, Gwano walloped Mwaluphamba 4-1 before qualifying for the final with a victory 2-0 over Changamwe. The final was a close contest between Gwano and Kilifi Mix which the former won thanks to a first half goal from Nuru Hadima. The third place playoff saw Mwaluphamba give Changamwe a 2-0 hiding. With the line-up now complete, attention now shifts to the Kisumu national finals which will be held from August 21 through to 28.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000NAIROBI, Kenya, August 1- The final spots for this year’s COPA Coca-Cola national finals were filled last weekend as Mombasa United beat Gulshan FC 1-0 to take the Coast Provincial title.Abresh Said Rasheed was the hero at the Tononoka grounds after grabbing the only goal to book his team’s ticket to the national finals in Kisumu.
By The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – A forest fire in the northeast Sierra Nevada doubled its reach Thursday, prompting evacuations in the immediate area and creating smoggy skies in the San Francisco Bay Area 225miles away. Located in Plumas National Forest near Greenville, the wildfire that broke out Monday had grown to 28,000 acres by Thursday morning, said forest spokesman Mark Beaulieu. State fire officials issued a mandatory evacuation order for about 100 homes and a voluntary order for another 400, he said. Officials said 25 homes and 10 other structures were threatened, but no evacuations have been ordered. Firefighters took advantage of cooler overnight temperatures to set back fires in the park’s steep terrain and were monitoring the weather to determine if they could continue employing the tactic, Colburn said. “The moisture in the vegetation is critically low, so it will more readily burn. Any kind of embers across the line have the potential to start spot fires,” he said. Cooler temperatures also helped firefighters get closer to containing a five-day old fire in Southern California that had threatened scattered ranches northeast of Los Angeles in the Angeles National Forest. Firefighters had the 2,100-acre fire 60percent contained Thursday morning and expected to have it surrounded by Saturday, said Dee Dechert, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Forest Service. A fire that scorched 250 acres near Lancaster was declared 100 percent contained as of 6 p.m. Wednesday, said Los Angeles County Fire Dispatch Supervisor Andre Gougis. City News Service contributed to this report.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations! You’re all set! No injuries or structure damage have been reported from the blaze, which was 10 percent contained, he said. But its smoke cast a hazy glow across much of Northern California and local health officials advised people with breathing problems to stay indoor. Beaulieu said with forecasts calling for lighter winds, firefighters hoped to make progress in corralling the blaze with “a very heavy aerial attack” near threatened communities. “So far, we have had a wind-driven fire. It’s going to become a fuel-driven fire,” he said. A second Northern California wildfire, burning in Henry W. Coe State Park south of San Jose, also expanded early Thursday to 18,905 acres, but remained about one-quarter contained, said Kevin Colburn, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Hazard worked under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea between 2013 and 2015 Manchester United are planning a sensational £90 million swoop for Chelsea starlet Eden Hazard, according to reports. The Belgian has attracted the interest of many of Europe’s other elite clubs including Real Madrid and PSG. The story that Hazard is on his way out of Stamford Bridge has gathered momentum after The Sun reported he has turned down a new long-term contract worth £300,000 a week to stay at Chelsea. A move to Old Trafford would see Hazard team up with Mourinho again after the two worked together in the Portuguese’s second stint as Chelsea manager. And of course, many have had their say about Hazard’s link to the Red Devils. Scroll down for some of the best tweets below… 1
